The Sinai Peninsula has served as a bridge for people to cross from one continent to the other and it also has served as a metaphysical bridge between man and God. The three great monotheistic religions had many ordeals in the Sinai Peninsula. This bridge also holds strategic value in war. Many Egyptians hate the Bedouin, the native tribe that lives on the Sinai Peninsula, because they did not support any government, not even Egypt’s. The Bedouins liked it better when the Israelis controlled the land.
The Sinai Peninsula has some of the best dive spots in the world. Most of the land used to be just desert but has now turned into shops, hotels, and nightclubs. This area might not seem like the middle east but you are reminded that that is where you are when you see a woman dressed all in black niqab sitting on a beach, alone, while her husband walks through the water. The tourism has jumped from around 8,000 tourists a year to more than 5,000,000 tourists a year. The Bedouins land was taken from them to build this new tourism center.
There were 3 car bombings in one night during October. Killing a total of 34 people and injuring many others. Many believe the government’s heavy-handed reaction to the bombing further divided the population, exactly what the bombers wanted. After the bombing of the Hilton, a group of Israeli firefighters got in their trucks and were ready to go and help save people from the bombing. The Egyptian guards at the boarder at first did not want to let them in but once they knew what the firefighters were going to do, let them in. The two courtiers showed that they could cooperate together in peace, against a common enemy.
